This digital app builds on Andrew West’s BabelStone Wenhai Lookup and Wenhai skeleton to provide a comprehensive digital representation of the phonological information contained in the Wenhai. It is the first step towards a complete digital edition of the Wenhai, which will also incorporate its graphic dimension (character composition) and semantic dimension (definitions).

For each character, the app gives its Wenhai position, rhyme number, and initial as classified in the Tongyin. The reconstruction panel presents Gong Hwang-cherng’s reconstruction alongside my own reconstruction (MB, August 2026). The fanqie section gives the Wenhai fanqie together with ad hoc IDs for the transitive fanqie chains (反切係連) to which the upper fanqie character (Fanqie I_ID) and lower fanqie character (Fanqie R_ID) belong. Each ID is followed by the complete set of characters connected through fanqie and therefore sharing the same initial or rhyme, respectively.

This tool provides bidirectional conversion between Gong Hwang-cherng’s and my own reconstructions of Tangut. It accepts individual forms as well as pasted lines and columns, preserving spaces, tabs, line breaks, commas, semicolons, and other separators. The conversion treats GHC’s reconstruction as a notation system; individual forms may differ where interpretations of the Wenhai categories diverge.
